Orange

Long enamored of black and white, my wife and collaborator has been working on a series of food shots featuring not food so much as the color of food. If you like her work, let her know or have a look at her gallery at ruhlmanphotography.com.

Update: In response to a comment below, Donna says she can make available reasonably priced 11×14 prints of this photo or any of her shots on her site. Email her there or send me an email via the above contact tab, and one of us will get back to you next week.

I’m on vacation from now until Monday, April 4.  Until then, check back in here every other weekday for another of Donna’s photos.

As ever, I’m grateful to all who come to this site, especially those who comment and keep the conversation lively! Thank you!

Love it! And now I want a kumquat.

I really like your work. The focal point of this image seems to be the kumquat, is there a reason it’s backlit? Because of how much lighter it is, my eye gets drawn to the back of the image, which is less visually interesting than the front.

This is a creative shot and I like the subject matter. I would have to agree with Ben, the lighting is very interesting.

Donna, all of your pictures are amazing, thank you for posting them.

I have phone and computer backgrounds for a long time now.

Beautiful! I have a basket of kumquats on my kitchen counter that are slated to meet their jammy destiny today.

Looking again I agree with Ben too. I’ve been playing around with lighting from underneath through glass which makes things transparent and is a strong back light. Then—using a weak front light to create contrast and silhouettes the outline of shapes like the teeth of the claw. I probably should have cropped more off the top of the image so the eyes wouldn’t travel up and away from the teeth of the center—sigh . . . shoot and learn . . . and keep doing it.
    Thanks everyone. Donna

I am so enjoying your photographs. They are just so lovely.

I find this photo whimsical, especially with the crab claw in the front. The lighting is fun, and I’m glad you didn’t crop it. I like the various shades of color. Hope you are enjoying your photos being posted.

Cracked up when watching No Reservations – when Bourdain’s in Cleveland to visit that Japanese chef — and he says “Ruhlman!!!”

I love the pics. I have a complaint. Recently this site has begun redirecting my iPad to the mobile site. Even if I click go to regular site, it redirects again to mobile site. This sucks and I hope can be corrected.
